Dog Shedding — What to Expect and How to Manage It

A dog’s fur type is one of the biggest influences on shedding rate. Thick, double-coated breeds such as Golden Retrievers tend to lose hair throughout the year.

Seasonal shedders usually experience two major molting periods. In spring they drop their heavier winter layer to prepare for warmer weather, and in fall they shed summer fur to make way for insulating undercoat growth.

The ideal brushing schedule depends on coat length, texture, and individual shedding patterns. Regular grooming helps remove loose hairs before they end up around the house.

Heavy shedders often benefit from multiple sessions per week, sometimes daily during peak shedding times. Even low-shedding dogs need occasional brushing to distribute natural oils and clear out dead hair.

Choosing the right brush makes the process more comfortable and effective, especially for dogs that shed a lot.

Short-haired breeds like Beagles, Pugs, and German Shorthaired Pointers do well with simple tools that pull out loose hair quickly. Natural-bristle brushes and grooming gloves work nicely for these coats.

When using a glove, gently massage the fur in circular motions, then smooth it forward to lift off any detaching hairs.

Longer-coated breeds such as Pomeranians, Collies, and Pembroke Welsh Corgis require instruments that reach beneath the surface where tangles and undercoat build-up occur.

Slicker brushes are useful for clearing dead hair from dense coats. Brush in several directions until each pass picks up less hair. During heavy shedding seasons, a coat rake or de-shedding device can extract large amounts of loose undercoat.

Before moving to deeper brushing, untangle knots with a steel comb or a specialized mat splitter.

While some shedding is normal, sudden or excessive hair loss could signal health issues. Conditions ranging from thyroid problems to skin allergies may affect coat quality and should be evaluated by a vet.
