Start with coat type and season before assuming a problem
A husky, shepherd, or retriever can dump far more hair than a low-shed coat, especially during a seasonal coat change. That kind of shedding is messy, but it is not the same thing as sudden unhealthy hair loss.
Look at whether the extra fur is coming out evenly across the body or whether the coat is thinning in specific irritated spots. Even all-over coat release usually points toward normal shedding patterns sooner than patchy loss does.
